Catalytic Reduction of Unsaturated Bonds with Tritium Gas

Alkene and alkyne derivatives can be reduced in the presence of tritium gas with appropriate catalysts. The most common catalyst is Pd on charcoal (Pd/C), but also poisoned catalysts and Pt/C are in use. This method leads to high specific activities. Additional incorporation of tritium atoms might occur by H/T exchange in allylic positions giving even higher specific activity than expected.
