Alkene and alkine derivatives can be converted into the corresponding alkane or alkene derivatives by reduction with tritium gas and a suitable catalyst. Additional tritium atoms can be incorporated into the molecule by the isotope scrambling effect. The extent of the scrambling depends on the structure of the reactant, the catalyst used and the reaction process. Catalytic multiple bond hydrogenation can be used to generate high specific activities at defined positions.
