handling c-14 manifold

Global standard for the safe handling of Tritium gas

schwarz weiß bild Anlage alt

In the 1950s, we began labelling organic substances in glass vacuum lines with tritium. Faced with tritium leaks, jammed valves, breakage of glass apparatus and other problems, we developed and built our own tritium manifold systems to make marking and labelling with tritium as safe and easy as possible. With our experience and in constant collaboration with world-leading experts in the field of tritium labelling, we have been able to continuously improve our tritium marking equipment in terms of safety. Today, our safety-based concept, combined with Swiss manufacturing quality, is a leading standard in isotope laboratories worldwide.

Tritium handling systems

Our tritium manifold systems are vacuum lines made entirely of stainless steel and tested for He leaks to below 10-9 mbar l/sec. The tritium gas is stored in the form of uranium tritide (UT3 ) in uranium storage beds (U-beds), where the T2 has an equilibrium partial pressure of < 10-4 mbar at room temperature. As there is practically no free tritium, the risk of diffusion or release of tritium during storage is reduced to an absolute minimum. If fresh tritium without decay product He-3 is required, free He-3 is pumped out beforehand or He-3 bound in the matrix is released by heating the storage unit and then cooling it (with complete reabsorption of T2 ) and then pumped out of the vacuum line. HTO cannot be formed in the manifold system as there is no contact between oxygen and tritium. Once T2 has been used, excess tritium can simply be absorbed back into the U-bed after cooling. Trace amounts of tritium removed from the system by the vacuum pump can be captured from the exhaust air using tritium retention systems such as the Tritium Mini Scrubber.

Emissions to the environment are therefore minimised.

Deuterium Handling Manifolds

RC Tritec’s deuterium manifolds provide a precise and safe solution for handling deuterium gas (D₂) and are ideally suited for applications in isotope labeling, materials science, and fusion research. They ensure the highest vacuum quality, accurate gas distribution, and modular control, enabling reliable and efficient execution of experiments or production processes.

Designed as compact and flexible systems, they also serve as the perfect preliminary stage or reference platform for tritium manifolds. Vacuum pumps, inert gas supply lines, precision pressure sensors, and getter or U-bed systems are ideal complementary components.

Research institutions worldwide use our tritium and deuterium handling manifolds. Here you will find a selection of recent scientific publications:
