The specific activity ranges for products depend on the synthetic route chosen to label the compound. Generally, the specific activity range is between 10-100 Ci/mmol. Depending on the application of the compound different activities are required. While only small activities (e.g. 10 - 1000 µCi) are required for biochemical assays, ADME studies can require up to 1 Ci of radioactive compound.

The long-term stability of tritium-labelled compounds varies from substance to substance. Generally, the specific activity as well as the storage concentration can influence the stability of a compound. The higher both factors are, the more compounds tend to degrade.

Upon request, we can perform stability studies, re-analyses and re-purifications. For custom synthesized compounds there will be a fee for any of the aforementioned services while those services are included for tritium labelled catalogue products.

Tritium-labelled compounds should always be handled in a fume hood. Additional precautions such as gloves, a lab coat and lab spectacles are required to safely handle such compounds. For other radioisotopes, more precautions could be required. 

Tritium-containing liquid waste should be disposed separately in containers while tritium-contamnated solid waste should be disposed of in an air-sealed container.

There are several methods to label substances with tritium with the most prominent being a direct H/T-exchange. With Palladium (Pd)-, Iridium (Ir)-, Rhodium (Rh)- and Ruthenium (Ru)-based catalysts we can exchange Hydrogens on the reference substance directly with tritium. There are other methods such as hydration of double or triple bonds, halogen/tritium (X/T)-exchange reactions as well as methylations and reductions using tritides. A newly established synthesis route is the enzymatic conversion of tritium-labelled precursors to obtain the tritiated final product.
